In Technics and Civilization Mumford writes “So one is not straining
the facts when one suggests that the monasteries — at one time there were 40,000 under the Benedictine rule — helped to give human enterprise the regular collective heat and rhythm of the machine; for the clock is not merely a means of keeping track of the hours, hut of
synchronizing the actions of men” (Mumford, 14). The “synchronizing” of the actions of people suggests that the regular tolling of clocks is one way of making humans more “machine-like.” With direct reference to this text, I want to know if this is an example of a loss of value in the life of humans or a gain in value. Why or why not?
