Mental Health Services Among Adolescents
Health Disparity Topic: Increase the proportion of primary care office visits where adolescents are screened for depression and receive treatment.
Mental health care spending for children (up to age 12) and youth (ages 1318), is one of the fastest areas of spending growth in child healthcare. Psychological problems are overlooked and undertreated in adolescents, especially among minorities. Research indicates that there are mental health service disparities among minority children and adolescents.
The high cost of care for child behavioral health problems underscores the need for more effective screening and prevention efforts for children at risk of developing mental health issues, but also raises the critical issue of mental health equity for low-income, racial, and ethnic minority children and youth.
The vast majority of minority children are reported as underutilizing mental health services. This was not related to a decreased need. In addition, research indicates disparities in the quality of mental health care that minorities receive
You are an APRN working to ultimately eliminate the health disparity, and your strategy should specifically address one of the areas of the social determinants of health.
