Colorado Technical University BSN in 10 Program Discussion

Question Description

write 250 words that respond to the following questions, with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. use 1 scholarly resource . Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

“BSN in 10” is an initiative that many professional associations and health care organizations have promoted to encourage registered nurses (RNs) to obtain a Bachelor’s degree within 10 years after initial licensure. Some states have also considered similar legislation.

Focus your discussion on the following:

  • Has your state board of nursing proposed such legislation? ( Florida)
  • How do you think nursing education should be changed to best prepare nurses for the needs of the profession and for health care consumers?
  • The BSN-prepared nurse receives education beyond his or her basic nursing program to include subject content on informatics, leadership, community and assessment, and others. Explain how you plan to integrate this new knowledge into your current nursing practice.

EXAMPLE *******

Currently New York and New Jersey are the only states that have active legislation requiring RN’s to obtain BSN within 10yrs of graduation. (Zittel.2016) I am currently practicing in Missouri and although many hospitals strive for Magnate status no other major push has been seen for RN’s to obtain BSN. One thing I found interesting is that according to the Missouri State Board of Nursing, the equivalent of a formal RN licensure can be obtained through a 2-year hospital apprenticeship. Additionally, Missouri is a compact state so this decision of alternative educational methods by Missouri has the potential to effect the care of patients in the now 33 states that honor the compact licensee.

Nursing is truly unique in how vast a profession it really is, not only in the different specialties but the people the background of the nurses themselves and the journey we take to get here. I feel we need to honor this uniqueness. Obviously there needs to be some ground rules and standard to ensure safety through competency evaluations/ extensive training. My sister and I are both RNs but took very different journey to get there. I feel we are both very compassionate, competent nurses that can bring different perspective to a situation. Neither one of us is better than the other, just different and valuable in our chosen specialty. I recall when I graduated as a LPN, a seasoned nurse looked at me and said “Congrats, now you’ve earned the right to start to learn”

I feel the BSN courses will “round out” my nursing experience. The additional subject matter in leadership, informatics and not just clinic aspects. To progress and differentiate between an effective leader and a resented manager (Finkelman.p16. 2015)
